After graduating I felt it was important to find an employer that would not only provide a supportive environment in which to begin my career as a Software Developer but would also challenge me to continue developing my skills. After doing some research and attending an interview I knew this was a company which would fill both these requirements.
I'm currently working on improving and expanding the functionality of the call centre software that Cumbria County Council uses for logging calls regarding faults with things like highways and street lights. I also work on the support team for this project as well.
I've also worked on several other projects since starting including road traffic accident data analysis software and project management software.
I have attended two Learning Tree courses in London over the last year. Being taught by experienced software engineers, who currently work in industry, they have been extremely beneficial as they concentrated purely on the technologies and skills that I use every day.
I've also been on a couple of team-building days with my colleagues. These included activities like raft building, archery, paint-balling and go-karting. Not only were these a great way to get to know the people I work with and develop team working skills but, more importantly, they were great fun!
For me, the most enjoyable aspect of software development is coding. It isn't easy but there's a real sense of achievement when you produce a great piece of code, whether it's 10 or 10,000 lines! I want to be able to keep coding for as long as possible and my immediate goal is to work towards being a Lead Developer.
I also really enjoy the analysis and design work that's part of the software development life-cycle and my ultimate goal is to become an Analyst Programmer. This would give me the best of both worlds - design and coding work!
One thing I've noticed since I joined Capita Symonds is just how friendly and relaxed everyone is. Being such a professional company I wasn't expecting this but it makes for a great environment to work in.
