Why Capita Symonds?

I joined Capita Symonds from having spent two and a half years at TRL (Transport Research Laboratory) where I worked mainly on the testing and development of in house traffic signals simulation software and on evaluating the congestion cost attributable to the movement of abnormal vehicles through macroscopic modelling.

Having been in a research role, I decided that I wanted to broaden my experience and influence real world roadside communications and detection equipment through Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) design and engineering consultancy.

I now help to design of roadside communications on major highway projects, and this work has developed my career as an ITS professional.

What project(s) are you working on at the moment?

I am helping to finalise the conceptual design of the ITS for the Limerick Tunnel in Ireland. I am also working on the M6 Carlisle to Guards Mill Extension roadside communications design. In addition to this I also played a role in the design of a verification process for the A249 Traffic Monitoring System.

What opportunities have you had to train and develop your skills at Capita Symonds?

Attending exhibitions, lectures and seminars has kept my knowledge up to date on roadside communications technology and information handling techniques. I have also been able to learn about key issues that underpin the direction of technological developments, contributing to my development as a professional.

I've attended the ITS World Congress in London and the TRAFFEX exhibition in Birmingham. In addition, I have attended several technical presentations and seminars, ranging from technical matters such as the implementation of a trial gantry design through to higher level discussions the examine policy and attempt to identify future technological demands.

What are your aspirations for the future?

To continue my development as an ITS professional and to become a leader in the field.
