Dublin Airport Area 14 Check-in

Location: Dublin Airport, Eire

Client: DAA

Project timescale: May 06 - Jan 07

Project Value: £10m

The project:

Terminal 1 at Dublin Airport had reached check-in capacity and DAA had to find a site for additional facilities. They identified an area of the basement that was originally designed as a station box for a fast rail link into the city, but had never been used.

The main objective was to create a space that met the functional criteria (providing 25 additional check-in desks) but also addressed the needs of the passenger in terms of quality of environment and ease of wayfinding.

What was Capita Symonds role on the project?

Capita Architecture was responsible for the design of the facility, which was delivered in conjunction with Irish practice Moloney O'Beirne.

The challenge was to achieve a six month programme from briefing to completion. Our response was to investigate pre-fabrication, repetition and the use of products that were quick to install. Hence we could save considerable time in the construction phase.

We also designed a 'loose fit' ceiling that minimised interfaces with walls and services - again this enabled us to save time in designing interfaces and overall co-ordination of the services and the ceiling.

What was YOUR role on the project?

I was project director and my role was very much 'front end' - I like to think that I helped establish the criteria for a successful project at the outset and helped develop a rigorous concept design that stood up to the challenges we faced.
