Qualifications: HNC Civil Engineering IEng AMICE
Start date: February 2001
I've worked in a variety of civil engineering sectors across the UK for nearly 30 years. Having started in the late '70s building the new town of Milton Keynes, I moved to work on South-West Water's 'Clean Sweep' programme in the early '90s. Since then I've worked in transport planning for a number of local authorities before returning to design work last year.
I was employed by Cumbria County Council for a year before TUPE transferring to Capita Symonds as part of its strategic partnership with the Council. Capita Symonds offered a good fit to the local authority work I have been used to: I wanted to continue working closely with the public - they are the end-users of what we do.
I've been working on the M6 Carlisle to Guards Mill extension in Cumbria. Most of my involvement on this large project has been environmental engineering - designing mammal crossings and obtaining consents for works in watercourses from the Environment Agency.
I am now working on a major urban enhancement scheme for Windermere in the Lake District National Park. This is presenting a real challenge: balancing the needs of traffic, tourists and locals.
I've benefited from a wide range of training initiatives. A few years ago I succeeded in completing the first year of the Engineering Management Partnership Programme, and there are numerous in-house seminars held relevant to my work (in areas such as contracts, Health & Safety, financial management etc). I have also attended a number of Capita courses on people and project management: this is part of my Skills Centre training - a Regions division initiative that enables employees to receive training and develop skills on the job.
