Capita Symonds Health and Safety team offers clients a wide range of audit and inspection services to support them in their compliance with health and safety legislation. 

OHSAS 18001 Audits/ H&S Management System Audits

Our team of auditors, some of which are OHSAS 18001 accredited auditors, are experienced in reviewing and auditing safety management systems and procedures across a wide range of industries and business types from SMEs through to large multi-national companies.  Our audits are not just paperwork focused, but also include discussions with staff and senior management to establish the working practices and safety culture present within the organisation.  For further information, see our Corporate Health and Safety page.

Legislative Compliance Audits

Capita Symonds’ legislative compliance audits cover over 50 different legislative subject areas.  These are wide ranging and include subjects from fire safety, working at height, working with radiation, welfare and hygiene.  In support of these subject areas there are over 400 legislative compliance check points that can be audited.  Each is given a red, amber or green status according to the evidence of compliance found during the audit.

Our legislative compliance audits are tailored to suit the specific requirements of our clients and can be used in any environment or industry working within the UK’s legislative framework.

Unlike other health and safety audits, this audit process does not examine in detail the adherence of a company to its own safety management system, but focuses on the actual compliance of a company’s operations and activities in relation to health and safety law.

The legislative compliance audit aims to:

  • Provide a position statement on an organisation’s adherence and compliance with legislation
  • Provide a quantitative measure of risk
  • Provide an action plan to remove high level risks
  • Provide guidance and advice on adherence to legislative requirements
  • Support the protection of an organisation’s reputation

Property/ Premises Safety Management Audits and Inspections

Capita Symonds Health and Safety regularly provides support to its clients through the audit of its property safety management systems and/or inspections of its premises.  Combining an audit of written management procedures as well as undertaking property inspections, we are able to provide advice and support to our clients with their ongoing health and safety management of properties and premises.  We have particular expertise in the following areas:

  • Offices and commercial premises
  • Retail and leisure environments, including shopping centres
  • Industrial units/ sheds
  • Educational establishments, hospitals and other local authority/ NHS properties
  • High security environments
  • Manufacturing/ chemical/ industrial plants
  • Power generation plants

Construction Site Safety Inspections

For many of our projects where we act as CDM co-ordinator, we also undertake regular site safety inspections.  Our inspections review the principal contractor’s compliance with his construction phase plan and examine the paperwork held on site and the activities being undertaken at the time.  Our inspections review against the requirements of Part 4 of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations and HSG150 Health and Safety in Construction and are always supplemented with a RAG report of our findings.

Site safety inspections are undertaken at a frequency agreed with the client and relate to the complexities and size of the project.

Asbestos Survey/ Removal Works Inspections

Capita Symonds’ asbestos management team also supports its clients with inspections of asbestos surveys and removal/ remediation works.  These inspections are designed to ensure compliance with the original specifications, Control of Asbestos Regulations, associated guidance, other relevant health and safety legislation and best practice. Disabled Access Audits
