Site Waste Management: Client Advisor

Since the introduction of the Site Waste Management Plan Regulations, we have undertaken the role of SWMP client advisor on over 250 construction projects across the UK.

These projects have ranged in complexity from minor refurbishment works, to demolition projects and new build construction schemes. Capita Symonds is part of the WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme) framework and is an exponent of the government initiative to reduce the amount of construction, demolition and excavation waste to landfill by 50% by 2012.

Our service builds on the extensive knowledge and expertise that we have in the construction industry and in our role as CDM co-ordinator under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations.

Our procedures are robust and reflect industry best practice. Our systems have been subject to external audit and we have received positive feedback for duty holders and from the Environment Agency.

Our service includes:

  • Advice on the competence of potential SWMP principal contractors
  •  Advice to clients on their duties and responsibilities associated with SWMPs
  • Explanation of the benefits of SWMPs
  • Monitoring ongoing design developments to ensure that relevant information is included within the SWMP
  • Monitoring of site security to ensure it is sufficient to prevent illegal disposal of waste
  • Production of draft SWMPs
  • Advice to designers on best practice - and how designers can be encouraged to use the design process to eliminate and reduce construction waste
  • Provision of guidance on best practice
  • Review and monitor the SWMP during the construction phase of the project
  •  Review waste deviations - compare estimates with actual waste generated
  • Ensure that relevant information is extracted from the SWMP for the H&S file and other uses at project completion
  • Undertake a final review within three months of completion of construction (as a requirement of the Regulations)
