The West Berkshire Waste Site Remediation and Enabling Works scheme
has won the Environmental Engineering category at the ICE’s South
East England (Thames Valley Branch) Engineering Excellence
Awards.
A Capita Symonds team worked with client West
Berkshire Council and contractors Bam Nuttall on the project which
used early engagement and liaison to develop and manage a
remediation strategy that significantly reduced the impact on the
local area in relation to vehicle movements and excess
noise.
The site, which comprised old railway sidings
and railway landfill, required substantial earthworks to deliver a
formation suitable for piling, a 0.4 hectare lake and the
management of risks for off-site migration of organic
pollutants.
Earthworks involved treating over 69,000
tonnes of material (partly by covered biopile technologies and
partly by encapsulation beneath a cap). 94% of this soil was used
for building platforms and acoustic bunds with 4.2% stockpiled for
future use and 1.8% sent to recycling facilities.
Heavy oil spillages within an old coal bunker
and leaking interceptor pit were dealt with primarily using pump
and dispose techniques.
The Capita Symonds team also developed good
relationships in the local community, holding meetings with
representatives from the neighbouring community and
businesses. A donation of much needed furniture was also made
to the local community centre.
Capita Symonds provided project management,
highways supervision, cost consultancy, contract advice, ecology,
CDM and earthwork design services on the scheme.
