The Abergavenny Brewery Yard
Regeneration Scheme has been officially opened by Peter Clarke,
Chairman of Monmouthshire County Council, and Jocelyn Davies AM,
the Welsh Assembly Government's (WAG) Deputy Minister for Housing
and Regeneration.

A team from Capita Symonds’ Cwmbran office designed and managed the
scheme in conjunction with Monmouthshire County Council and
Contractors Alun Griffiths.
Funded by Monmouthshire County Council and the
Welsh Assembly Government, the new development will create a new
community square and improved pedestrian links within the town
centre.
The square – which will feature artworks by
artist Howard Bowcott – is a key part of the town’s regeneration,
and will provide a stunning setting for the world famous
Abergavenny Food Festival and the renowned local outdoor
markets.
The project involved major design challenges
requiring significant input in structural and civil engineering due
to the complex levels across the site and a high level of inter
discipline co-ordination in working with local artists and the
local community.
The theme for the project takes its lead from
the former Brewery on the site and the local community were heavily
involved in interpretation of the site’s community heritage through
poetry which was inscribed into stone and sculpture pieces, adding
a real sense of ownership.
A new café is provided as part of the project,
which as well as the main retaining walls throughout the site
uses materials in-keeping with the surrounding historic
buildings and successfully blends contemporary design with
traditional materials.
Jon Fox, Project Director, Capita Symonds
said: “Capita Symonds is very pleased to have completed this
project in partnership with Monmouthshire County Council. Our team
in the Cwmbran office have fully engaged with the challenge of
successfully delivering a difficult design for a very complex site,
in a busy location and ultimately creating a new and exciting
addition to the heart of Abergavenny.”
