The Llandysul Bypass has won the 2010
George Gibby Award for the ‘Outstanding Example of a Civil
Engineering Project’ at the ICE Wales Annual Awards.
In 2009 the Llandysul Bypass on the
Carmarthenshire / Ceredigion border in West Wales officially opened
to traffic, seven months ahead of schedule. Capita Symonds provided
design services on the £23m project which provides a vital economic
link for the area.
The ICE event - Wales’s most prestigious
awards ceremony for major civil engineering projects - featured a
very strong field of entries including the Ffos Llas race course in
Carmarthenshire, the Snowdon Visitor Centre (Hafod Eryri), the M4
widening between Junctions 29 and 32, and another Capita Symonds
scheme - the M4 Junction 24 Improvement.
The 3.2km Llandysul Bypass circumvents the
town which previously experienced severe traffic congestion as it
lies on the main route between the regional centre of Aberystwyth
to the North and South Wales. The complex project involves the
creation of a straight road through two river valleys via three
viaducts – two 120m and one 160m in length.

Capita Symonds' John Morgan says: “The judges
particularly noted the success with which the road had been
designed to blend into its rural setting and the very effective way
in which engineering challenges encountered during construction
were overcome by the team.”
“The project was submitted by the team
responsible for its delivery, comprising Ceredigion County Council
as client, BAM Nuttall as Principal Contractor and Capita Symonds
as designer. In reality of course, our role has been much wider
than merely ‘designer’. The ultimate success of the project is
testimony to contributions, large and small, harnessing the
expertise of people throughout the organisation working together
effectively over many years. In addition to the pride we can take
from the award itself, we have a very satisfied client and
contractor partner and this can only be good for future
opportunities with them.”
