Mastmaker Road near Canary Wharf in
East London has won the 'Best New Development in the Affordable
Homes Sector' category at the Evening Standard Homes Awards
2010.
A team from
Capita Lovejoy - Capita Symonds’ land planning division -
designed the public and private realm environment for the high
density residential development which consists of 199 mixed tenure
homes with integral community areas.

Giles Charlton, Capita Lovejoy, says: “A
community space was designed as an integral part of the project and
incorporates a rooftop sports pitch. The development makes use of a
local 'Combined Heat and Power' system and includes greenwalls,
bird boxes, bat boxes, insect bricks and biodiversity roofs to help
develop local eco-systems.”
“Integration with the wider community was a
key factor in the design development and consultation included a
public exhibition for local residents. The project includes open
space accessible to the public, extension and enhancement of an
existing playgound, extension of gardens to adjacent residents, the
provision of flexible space for events and an area of communal
gardens for educational and recreational use. Public access and
permeability is improved with the introduction of a new East-West
link through the site as set out in the Millennium Quarter
Masterplan,” he adds.
