Winterbourne International Academy opens

Winterbourne International Academy

Cricket star Marcus Trescothick has opened the new sports hall at Winterbourne International Academy in Bristol.

The hall is named after Eddie Gregg - a PE teacher and friend of the Somerset batsman - who died from leukaemia at the age of 24.

The £2.4m project, which includes a large four court county standard hall with a mezzanine spectator platform, reception area, toilets and fitness room, is the final part of a wider scheme to create a sports village which also comprises an all-weather pitch and swimming pool. The sports village will be used both by students at the school and members of the local community.

Capita Symonds’ Bristol office was appointed in January 2008 as Project Manager, Cost Manager, CDM and Clerk of Works. Works on site were completed ahead of programme in December 2009.

Academy Principal, Rob Evans said: “These excellent facilities are long overdue and complete the final aspect of our Sports Village concept. Finally we have provision for PE and Sport which we can be proud of and which will encourage our students and the community to adopt healthy lifestyles.”
