The project
Capita Symonds was commissioned by
Transport for London to undertake an environmental assessment in
support of the proposed A10 Tottenham Hale Gyratory Improvement
Scheme, located in North London.
The existing one-way A10 Tottenham Hale
Gyratory system was created in the 1970’s to improve traffic
flows. However, there are now high volumes of traffic,
and the gyratory and contra-flow bus lane have contributed to the
area having a high number of personal injury accidents. The
few pedestrian crossings can also cause difficulty for residents
within the one-way system.
Transport for London is proposing to change
the one-way gyratory system to a two-way system, and to create a
new public square and bus station outside Tottenham Hale
Station. The Scheme aims to reduce the impact of traffic
on the local area and allow for future traffic demands. This
would enable the regeneration of the area, as outlined in the
London Plan and the London Borough of Haringey’s Unitary
Development Plan.
The commission began with the appraisal of
four scheme options. Each option had the objective of
improving the efficiency of traffic flow around the gyratory,
improving facilities for pedestrians and cyclists, reducing
severance, improving safety, and aiding regeneration in the
Tottenham Hale area. Some of the options required demolition
of buildings. As a result of the option appraisal the
proposed Scheme was chosen, and refined to provide safety and
environmental benefits, but with minimal landtake.
