The project
The A24 is part of the Portuguese State Shadow Toll Road
Concession Programme. It links Viseu, Vila Real and Chaves
with a high quality dual carriageway motorway – with links to other
new motorways in Portugal and Spain.
The road fully opened to traffic in July 2007,
after 5½ years of construction by Eiffage. A
number of large viaducts, long sections of steep grades and other
engineering features were needed to fit the motorway into the
mountainous topography of Northern Portugal. The longest
structure is 1,350m long with a height above the valley floor of
over 80m.
Capita Symonds carried out technical and
traffic audits on behalf of the Lenders providing finance to the
Concessionaire. This work also involved review of operation
and life cycle maintenance of the completed road as well as review
and monitoring of the traffic flows.
