The facts
Client: Countryside
Council for Wales (CCW)
Location: Wales
Services: GIS
Sector: Environment
The project
Capita Symonds was commissioned to deliver over
1,730 maps with statistics and explanatory notes for CCW to use in
consultation with Welsh Assembly Government, National Parks and
Local Authorities in drawing together CCW’s input into the All
Wales Spatial Plan.
Using a portable replication of
the CCW map server, Capita Symonds produced maps, statistics and
explanatory notes that described the following environmental data
for Wales:
- International and national
designations
- Public access areas and
paths
- Designated landscape areas and
historic landscapes
- Broad habitats
- Visual and sensory landscape
areas
- Landmap cultural
areas
- Wildlife trust and RSPB
sites
Over 1,730 bilingual A3 maps were
produced in a very short time scale. All maps were produced to
scale and included basic statistics on area, counts and
lengths.
Capita Symonds was able to produce
these statistics and maps using our bespoke Automated Map
Production software. The automated approach requires development of
a single map template to client specifications, and identification
of common or ‘global’ and map specific information. The ‘global’
information, such as project title is entered via a user form. Map
specific information such as coordinates or map tile reference are
generated dynamically by the software during the mapping
process.
