The project
The objectives of this commission were
to provide a single dataset that defined the Environment Agency’s
Statutory Areas of Planning Consent.
The Agency owns and maintains the statutory
definition of the Main River Network. This had to be integrated
with rivers as defined by Ordnance Survey Mastermap data,
Environment Agency Defences and Spatial Definition of Estuary
Banks.
The task was therefore to integrate
the Main River Network and features from Ordnance Survey MasterMap
topographic layer. This required the development of customised GIS
tools to extract relevant MasterMap water features from almost 20Gb
of compressed data and topologically join with River Network
data.
The resultant features were buffered to the
specified distance, quality assured, cleaned to stringent ArcSDE
data standards, and finally being post processed into a single data
set for England and Wales. This data set was
then provided to all local authority planning departments in
England and Wales during March 2007.
