The project
British American Tobacco (BAT) approached Capita Symonds
in October 2007 for full project management, cost management and
design services for their proposed new production facility in Oran,
Algeria.
They had an extremely challenging programme to meet their legal
obligations to the Algerian Government. The key milestones
were to appoint a contractor and start construction works by
end of February 2008 and start production by end of February
2009.
Capita Symonds carried out the site investigation, completed the
design and tendered the works with bills of quantities, analysed
the returned tenders and negotiated the final contract with the
preferred contractor by early January 2008 which was
within four months from appointment. The contractor started
works on site by end of February 2008 as planned.
Failure to meet this date would have resulted in BAT’s existing
importing licence not being renewed. The factory was completed on
time to start production as planned met the Algerian Government
requirements
