The project
On the eastern bank of the River Ichen, in the Woolston
suburb of Southampton, work has begun on one of Southern England’s
most ambitious regeneration projects.
The £500m Centenary Quay mixed-use
development will play a central role in revitalising the area,
creating over 1000 jobs for local people and bringing homes,
community facilities and commercial outlets.
A team from Capita Symonds is providing
engineering transport, environment and regeneration services on the
scheme which is due for completion in 2018.
When completed the 31 acre former Vosper
Thorneycroft shipyard site will provide 1,620 new homes; a Marine
Employment Quarter; a foodstore; a range of mixed use office and
retail spaces for businesses; a hotel; restaurants; and cafes. The
development is also expected to create up to 1,000 permanent new
jobs.
The South East England Development Agency
(SEEDA) first identified the site as a key strategic location and a
South Hampshire priority in the Regional Economic Strategy. Capita
Symonds is a core member of the project developer Crest Nicholson’s
design team, having advised the company during the developer
competition phase on a significant range of issues associated with
engineering, transport and the environment.
A multidisciplinary Capita Symonds team also
worked through a major revision of the masterplan to achieve a more
balanced and mixed community, particularly to include family houses
with gardens alongside a mix of sizes of apartments. The inclusion
of a foodstore within the development has also been achieved with a
view to keeping shopping trips down and thereby creating a more
sustainable development.
The team has since prepared a number of
supporting documents to the revised outline planning application
including the Transport and Flood Risk Assessments together with
authoring chapters of the Environmental Statement on air quality,
odour, transport, noise and vibration, ground conditions, the water
environment, and waste.
