The project
Capita Symonds was commissioned by Sheffield International
Venues, Sheffield City Council and Creative Sheffield to conduct an
initial feasibility study into the ‘House of Sport’ concept.
With a world class range of sporting and elite athlete support
facilities within Sheffield, the concept (potentially comprising
athlete accommodation and secondary office provision for NGBs) was
developed as ‘the missing link’ to complete the world class
portfolio of facilities and athlete / elite sport experience ahead
of the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics Games.
The major sport venues in Sheffield generate a significant
number of bed nights through a broad range of sports events and
training camps. This created a strong case that the needs of
Sheffield’s elite athletes could be better served by the provision
of bespoke overnight accommodation located close to the EISS.
A range of delivery and site options were presented and
scrutinised, identifying the preferred and most favourable options.
The feasibility study determined the project could be viable and
recommended that further work should be carried out, including site
acquisition, business case approval, funding analysis and obtaining
planning permission.

Impressed with the quality of the report. All the questions within the brief were fully covered and we received regular progress reports. Not afraid to challenge some of our client opinions. In addition, did not complete a report that told us what they thought we, as clients, wanted to hear.
