The project
A risk-based approach to flood risk demands
quantification of the magnitude of the severity of flood hazards.
Accordingly the Environment Agency’s Flood Mapping Strategy
identifies the need to prepare data so that the presence and
severity of flood hazards can be mapped.
The Flood Hazard Pilot Project aims to inform and influence the
strategic direction of Environment Agency policy, whilst making
practical recommendations to those wishing to utilise GIS and
hydraulic modelling to generate flood hazard data.
The project provides information and
guidance to managerial and technical staff in government bodies,
companies or individuals and focuses on three key
issues:
- identification of the need and purpose for flood hazard
data
- indicative cost / quality guidelines for producing
data
- derivation and management of flood hazard data and
maps
The findings of the project will be used
by the Environment Agency to ensure flood hazard is produced
to common, consistent standards and fit for the purposes of the end
user.
