The facts
Title: Gatwick Airport North Terminal
Extension (NTX) and North Terminal Interchange
(NTI)
Client: Morgan Sindall
Location: Gatwick
Services: Architecture
Sector: Aviation
Contract Type: NEC
Project Value: £73m
Start: 2010
Completion: 2011
The project
The North Terminal Extension at
Gatwick Airport was officially opened by former Prime Minister, The
Rt Hon Sir John Major KG CH, following the completion of a £73m
project to extend the building and enhance capacity to 20 million
passengers per year by 2020.
Capita Symonds designed the Morgan Sindall constructed scheme which
comprised the 1.25 hectare extension of the southern and eastern
zones of the terminal to provide additional check-in and baggage
reclaim capacity. There are now 18 new check-in desks, bringing the
total to 140, including an additional 70 self-service kiosks, plus
two new reclaim belts - one for international flights and one for
domestic - which are significantly cutting time spent waiting for
luggage.
The extended North Terminal follows the completion of work late in
2010 to revitalise and expand the forecourt and construct a new
interchange (NTI) – also designed by Capita Symonds - to provide a
modern new entrance into the terminal building.
A major aspect of the project was the improvement of passenger
circulation and wayfinding. Passengers being dropped off
outside the new entrance can go up one of two moving walkways or
lifts where they will meet passengers coming off the new
inter-terminal shuttle. From here, passengers all move in the
same direction to the extended terminal and check-in areas.
Passengers arriving home or tourists visiting the UK move through
ground level with a direct route into the car park. They also have
easy access to the airport’s taxi service, car hire or
inter-terminal shuttle in order to catch a train for their onward
journey.
