The project

Capita Symonds was project manager and lead designer for the reconstruction of the north apron at jersey airport.

The works consisted of the demolition of the old aircraft parking aprons on the North side of the passenger pier, and the construction of new concrete pavements designed to accommodate all current and proposed aircraft types likely to use the airport. The old concrete paving was crushed and recycled for use in the new construction, so minimising both the import of fresh aggregates and the off-site disposal of waste.

Also included was substantial surface water drainage infrastructure, including pollution control measures: a fuel interceptor, aeration pond and reed beds were provided to manage and treat discharges from the airfield. The aeration pond included an innovative lightweight netted cover to deter birds. Additionally, the project included aeronautical ground lighting, and a new fixed electrical ground power distribution and metering system, with outlets at each of the new stands.

Capita Symonds undertook the detailed design of the new aircraft pavements, aeronautical ground lighting, and surface water drainage. Under a separate appointment, Capita Symonds also (CI) provided Project Management services through to successful completion.

Jersey Airport is critical to the economy of the island, it being the primary link to the UK mainland, and therefore any disruption to its operation must be minimised and carefully managed. The construction works were carried out in phases to maintain aircraft operations throughout, with the minimum of operating restrictions.
