The project
In August 2008, Capita Symonds’ strategic partner DMS,
were appointed as principle contractor to construct a new 5km
section of red grade mountain bike route in Kielder
Forest.
The route traversed a recently felled site over deep
peat. Working closely with the Forestry Commission and the
appointed trail designer a route was tagged over the fell, to
create an exciting, yet buildable route.
With a route agreed, three specialist 360 tracked ‘bogmaster’
excavators were deployed to undertake the construction of the
track. The excavators used tree roots and stumps to create a
floating mat before importing suitable material to create a
sustainable mountian bike surface.
The final stage involved giving the route its character by
creating the berms, double jump, table tops and many other exciting
features along with landscaping the areas adjacent the new
route.
