The project
Constructed in 1904, this is an
impressive and imposing building. The main building has an overall
plan footprint of about 16.3m width by 22.4m length and there is a
disused swimming pool beneath part of this.
The external facades are predominantly faced
with grey pennant sandstone. However, extensive red brick detailing
has been incorporated to provide both relief and interest to the
elevations. The building was listed, as Grade II, in 1999 as “a
well-designed and prominently located former colliery Workmen's
Hall, its detail and large size testament to the importance of the
local coal industry during the Edwardian period.”
Proposals required detailed consultation with
the local authority and its associated partners as well as Cadw. We
worked closely with other professional members of the team to
ensure that Listed Building Consent was obtained as early on in the
process as possible. The total refurbishment of the building will
bring it back into full and meaningful community usage, thereby
fulfilling its original purpose. This has secured its ongoing, and
now familiar, presence within the south Wales valleys and will act
as a reminder to future generations of the areas mining
heritage.
