The project
Working on behalf of Watkin Jones, Capita Symonds are providing
Civil, Structural and Geotechnical Services for this £25m Mixed-Use
Development in Edinburgh.
The project consists of small business units, student
accommodation, retail space and residential apartments including
affordable housing. The project is predominantly steel frame
construction.
With our extensive previous experience of student accommodation
we were able to provide the most cost effective solution to the
client. Understanding the client’s requirement in regard to this
element is paramount in the successful delivery of any student
accommodation scheme. All solution were considered to provide a
flexible design in regard to program.
The chosen framing solution used a full steel frame and concrete
composite floors without the need for propping - allowing a rapid
succession of fit-out to follow and decrease the build program.
Concrete transfer slabs are used to provide clear and efficient
transition between the car parking zone, commercial zones and
retail zones and the apartments above. This allows flexibility in
column grid spacing to be incorporated at a very early stage.
Ground conditions on site proved challenging with the presence
of high groundwater and running sands and gravel. Therefore a
sleeved piling retaining wall option was used in basement car
parking areas.
