The project
Working directly for the ODA, Capita Symonds’ John
Nicholson (pictured) was appointed as Client Project Director for
the London 2012 Games Aquatic Centre and Aquatics
Zone.
The Aquatics Zone consists of all
infrastructure works associated with the Zaha Hadid-designed
Aquatic Centre including ground remediation, services diversions,
roads and bridges as well as the design and delivery of the
adjoining temporary 5,000 seat Water Polo venue.
John was originally appointed by Sport England
in 2003 to undertake a feasibility study for an Olympic-size
Swimming Pool on the site ,, and this led ultimately to his
management of the design competition and the subsequent appointment
of Zaha Hadid following London’s successful 2012 bid. Thereafter,
John was responsible for the delivery of the £300m scheme on time,
within budget and with one of the best health and safety records on
the Olympic Park.
Working with multiple stakeholders including
LOCOG, LDA, OPLC, the relevant London Boroughs, Sport England, and
the UK government’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport, John
oversaw all major aspects of the works and ensuring that project
works were undertaken in an environmentally sensitive manner to
produce a sustainable legacy for local
communities.
