The project

Caerphilly County Borough Council commissioned Capita Symonds to design and project manage a Safe Routes to School scheme for the community of Newbridge, South Wales.

The scheme comprises two combined footway/cycleway bridges which will have an important role in respect of the regeneration of Newbridge Town Centre and more specifically the local transportation infrastructure. The structures will cater for pedestrians, cyclists and themobility impaired.

The new £2.6m Pont Calzaghe Bridge, provides an important link between the town centre, Newbridge Comprehensive School, the nearby leisure centre and the new local Ebbw Valley railway station.

The scheme is a multi-funded project with finance obtained from five separate bodies. The contract has been administrated under the NEC option D. Features of the scheme included:

  • Environmental appraisal and reptile relocation
  • Liaison with Network Rail and submission of appropriate documentation
  • Liaison with school, leisure centre and local community
  • Design of piled foundations in linewith EA requirements
  • Illumination to the deck via LEDs incorporated into top parapet rail
  • Design developed in consultation with steelwork fabricator
  • Dynamic analysis of superstructure using Lusas software

The River Ebbw Bridge comprises a single span cable-stayed steel superstructure supported by a single raking mask centrally positioned within the walkway and extending above the deck. The railway footbridge comprises a single span, half through curved vierendeel truss spanning over the Ebbw Valley railway line.

The footbridge designs were developed to provide landmark structures in line with client requirements. Disability access groups were consulted throughout with the geometry chosen to enhance the appearance and to comply with DDA requirements.

The bridge has been named after local heroes - Newbridge’s undefeated world boxing champion Joe Calzaghe and his award-winning trainer father Enzo. Calzaghe Jr and Snr were star guests at the bridge's opening ceremony. Read more about the official opening.
