The project
Capita Symonds has completed three
noise mapping contracts for the Department of Environment, Food and
Rural Affairs (Defra).
The aim of the project was to deliver a suite
of maps showing ambient road noise levels, to support Defra’s
commitment to developing a National Ambient Noise Strategy, in line
with EC Directive Acc. 2002/49/EC.
Services included:
- Pre-processing tasks included a series of
data attribution, cleansing and simplification tasks that were
applied using semi-automated workflow procedures, developed and
programmed in ArcGIS.
- Noise contour maps were produced for
Tyneside and Teeside, Yorkshire and Humberside, and the primary
road network in the north of England. Noise maps were prepared for
six different noise mapping indicators, and show 5db noise level
bands and provide statistics for area affected. These maps and data
will be used by Defra to calculate the population affected by
significant noise levels and reporting to EU in 2007.
