The project
Nottingham City Council have joined forces with Edge educational
foundation, University of Nottingham and local businessman David
Samworth to bring a £40m development of 2 new Academies to the city
of Nottingham, replacing the existing William Sharp and River Leen
schools.
The Nottingham University Samworth Academy, which replaces the
William Sharp School, will specialise in health sciences. The
Bulwell Academy, which will occupy the former site of the River
Leen School will encourage practical learning through involvement
with local businesses and colleges.
Capita Symonds has provided full acoustic consultancy and design
on the project, from planning stage through to detailed design.
Surveys and Environmental impact assessments were carried out at
the planning stages, and assistance was provided with the
development of design solutions of the buildings’ external
envelope, ensuring that internal BB93 criteria would be achieved.
Reverberation times for both academic spaces and more complex
ancillary spaces were calculated using state-of-the-art computer
modelling techniques and software.
The construction phase of both academies began in February 2009,
with completion scheduled for September 2009, during which time
Capita Symonds will continue to provide a full acoustic consultancy
role.
