Olympic and Paralympic Venues Structural Technical Review

The facts

Client:   Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA)
Location:  London
Services:  Structural Engineering
Start/Completion: 2007 - 2012

The project

Capita Symonds provided structural review services for the Olympic Stadium, the Aquatics Centre and the Water Polo Arena. Capita Symonds’ work on the Olympic Stadium encompassed:

  • RIBA stages C and D independent peer review;
  • Review of design team drawings during construction;
  • Review of contractors’ quality control procedures;
  • Provision of engineering advice to the supervisor under the NEC3 form of contract;
  • Site inspections during construction;
  • Review of method statements;
  • Review of handover packages; and
  • Review of defective and remedial works.

Capita Symonds used the same team for both the design review and site inspection works. This ensured both consistency throughout the project and that any particularly important design issues highlighted earlier in the programme could be closely monitored on site.

Capita Symonds was also appointed by the ODA to undertake a similar role for the Aquatics Centre and Water Polo Arena. As well as completing the functions outlined above, the team also undertook full Category 3 structural checks of the iconic roof design, the foundation design over the cable tunnels, and the 15 metre high legacy glazed facades.
