The project

The new £334m Royal Derbyshire ‘Super Hospital’ combines the existing services of two hospitals - the Derby General Hospital and Derby Royal Infirmary - on the site of the city’s old general hospital.

The hospital was designed by our architecture division – Capita Architecture – and built by Skanska, as part of the Government’s PFI programme.

The project comprised the demolition of the pre 1970s facilities, the refurbishment of newer buildings and the construction of a major extension to the Acute Hospital.

In total the new hospital project features 7,500 rooms, approximately 128,000 sq of new build and 29,800sqm of major refurbishment. During the construction period the hospital’s facilities were kept fully operational, including the Derby Medical School (run in partnership with the University of Nottingham). In fact, the new hospital has also become one of the largest teaching hospitals in the UK.

The project has already been rated as ‘Excellent’ for use of resources, and ‘Good’ for quality of services by the Healthcare Commission - making it one of the most advanced hospital trusts in the country

The most recently completed phase of the project - the site’s brand new Acute Hospital - features 1,159 beds, a new A&E facility, 35 Operating Theatres, Diagnostic and Assessment departments and an Education Centre. The second phase of construction has made provision for the new Special Care Baby Unit, Maternity Unit and Rehabilitation Units containing clinical and FM Facilities as well a Brachyotherapy Unit, Oncology Unit and new Mortuary.
