Capita Symonds acts as
Sustainability and Carbon Reduction manager for Somerset
Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. Our primary role is to
strategically manage and implement all sustainability and carbon
reduction work within the Trust, providing direction and compliance
with guidance and regulations.
As sustainability and carbon reduction
lead for the Foundation Trust, we are responsible for establishing
and embedding sustainability and carbon reduction into all areas of
the Trust’s core business. Our designated lead for this role has
worked closely with the Trust to monitor compliance regarding
regulations, guidance and best practice, establishing strategies
and action plans for implementing carbon reduction initiatives and
provided systematic leadership to implement processes.
In addition we have fulfilled all four
key objectives of the NHS Carbon Reduction Strategy;
- We have produced a Board approved
Sustainable Development Management Plan (SDMP), which sets out the
Trust’s approach to and strategic direction in relation to
sustainability and carbon reduction
- We have signed up to the Good
Corporate Citizenship assessment model, which has allowed us to
assess how the Trust can contribute to sustainable development
- We are monitoring, reviewing and
reporting on carbon. We have measured the carbon footprint of the
Trust to allow us to set future reduction targets (in line with the
requirements of the Climate Change Act 2008)
- We actively raise carbon awareness at
every level of the organisation through the establishment of the
Carbon Reduction Group and production of a Sustainable
Communications Plan.
We have provided the Trust with
independent strategic advice and direction on the UK’s first
mandatory carbon trading scheme, CRC Energy Efficiency. Through our
detailed knowledge of the CRC Energy Efficiency scheme, we are
ensuring that all processes and protocols within the Trust are
established in preparation for when they join the scheme.
Our added value, expertise and
knowledge of sustainability and carbon reduction within healthcare
environments has allowed the Trust to set an example by being on
track to meet its 10% carbon reduction target by 2015 (based
2008/2009 data from the SHA trajectories). We are proud to be
supporting and working in close partnership with Somerset
Partnership NHS Foundation Trust to achieve this commendable
position
