The facts
Client: Wirral Council
Location: West Kirby
Services: civil engineering, ecology,
procurement, cost management, coastal
Sector: Maritime
Project Value: £1.3m
Start/Completion: 2009
The project
West Kirby Marine Lake is 22ha in area filled with sea
water and bounded on the seaward side by a 1.1km embankment and on
the landward side by West Kirby promenade.
The lake and embankment provide an amenity and act as submerged
breakwaters in spring tide storms, providing a coastal defence
function.
Capita Symonds was appointed by Wirral Council
to undertake the following:
- Prepare a Project Appraisal Report for
submission to the Environment Agency for funding
- Design remedial measures to the embankment,
rock armour and sheet piles
- Design changes to jetties and outfall
sluices
- Assess and mitigate environmental
impacts
- Prepare tender documents and invite
tenders
- Administer the contract and supervise the
works
The construction costs were approximately
£1.3m and the works were successfully
completed in July 2009. Key challenges overcome by the team
included the programming of works to account for tidal working
and dealing with the first contractor appointed on the
project going into receivership.
