The project

Capita Symonds provided Construction Project Management services on the development of the £23m Westminster City Academy in Westbourne Green, West London.

The Stirling-prize nominated Academy is located directly opposite the famous Westway - an elevated section of the A40 near Paddington – and features research studios, anti-bullying toilets and even walls covered in inspirational slogans.

A flagship of the government's academies scheme, the 1175 pupil school specialises in "international business and enterprise" as it looks to nurture the fledgling entrepreneurs and city traders of the future. The site is also shared with a Sports Centre, part-funded by The City of Westminster, which is used by the local community outside of Academy opening hours.

Designed as a three-storey building with classrooms arranged around a central atrium, the Academy includes a large lecture theatre and underground car parking for staff to make best use of the tight inner-city site. The dining area is situated both internally and externally on a third floor roof terrace incorporating views across West London.

We also provided full Facilities Management consultancy during the implementation phase of the project, focusing on those areas of the design that would impact most heavily on future  maintenance delivery for the Academy. For example, as there is poor air quality and high levels of noise from the A40 Westway flyover adjacent to the site, we also developed a comprehensive system of mechanical ventilation for the school.
