Nowhere is the issue of UK government spending cuts more keenly
felt than the defence sector.
It was reported in Building magazine that over the next four
years, the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), which
oversees all the MoD’s infrastructure and facilities management,
needs to save £1.2bn across the defence estate. Valued at nearly
£20bn, and costing nearly £3bn a year to run, the estate comprises
approximately 4,000 sites including airfields, naval bases,
barracks, major training facilities and 50,000 homes for service
families. Overall, the MoD owns about 240,000ha, with rights of
access to a further 130,000ha across the UK, and it manages
200,000haoverseas, too.

parent company, Capita plc.
Together we have a substantial track record of undertaking major
defence and security projects that have supported and delivered
significant change across both public and private sector
organisations. Capita Symonds has delivered across the diverse
range of facilities within the Defence Infrastructure Organisation
(DIO)’s property and operational portfolios, including new build

laboratories, healthcare, offices, manufacturing, workshops and
hangar buildings – as well as major projects for clients such as
BAE and Airbus.
Capita plc is also working in partnership with the armed forces
to deliver the Recruiting Partnering Project (RPP), which
represents a major investment in the transformation of military
recruiting over the next ten years.
We have worked across all forms of MoD / DIO procurement
including PPP/PFI and Regional and stand alone Prime Contracting
and offer a number of specialist technical services relating to
secure and hardened facilities, special structures and
infrastructure, along with an in-depth knowledge of
defence-specific processes and benchmarking such as DEEP (Design
Excellence Evaluation Process) evaluation. We design solutions
which recognise the importance of life cycle costing, working
closely with supply chains to establish maintenance and replacement
cycles together with warranties and guarantees.
Having worked with the defence community for over 30 years we
understand the importance of being innovative whilst respecting
tradition. This enables us to respond to the current challenges the
sector faces in embracing change, undertaking rationalisation and
achieving value for money.
