Nowhere is the issue of UK government spending cuts more keenly
felt than the defence sector.
It was recently reported in Building magazine
that over the next four years, the Defence Infrastructure
Organisation (DIO), which oversees all the MoD’s infrastructure and
facilities management, needs to save £1.2bn across the defence
estate. Valued at nearly £20bn, and costing nearly £3bn a year to
run, the estate comprises approximately 4,000 sites including
airfields, naval bases, barracks, major training facilities and
50,000 homes for service families. Overall, the MoD owns about
240,000ha, with rights of access to a further 130,000ha across the
UK, and it manages 200,000ha overseas, too.
Capita Symonds is one of the UK's leading

across the defence sector, offering a portfolio of services
unmatched by our peers that fuses property and strategic real

landlord negotiations; workspace planning; ongoing property &
asset management; and the maximisation of disposal income.
We also have a substantial and well proven track
record in the design and construction of new buildings – and the
refurbishment of existing stock - across all aspects of the MoD’s
estate including residential, laboratory, healthcare, office,
training, workshop and hanger buildings.
We have worked across all forms of MoD procurement
from GC/Works and DefCon 2000 through to PPP/PFI and Regional and
Stand-alone Prime Contracting. This is coupled with a thorough
working knowledge of JSP Scales together with DIO’s Technical
Bulletins, Policy and Guidance documents.
We also have considerable experience pioneered
through our PFI and Prime Contracting work of delivering design
solutions which recognize the importance of ‘Life Cycle Costing’.
This has been achieved by working closely with the supply chain on
each of these projects to establish maintenance and replacement
cycles together with warranties and guarantees.
